Want your fabric to last longer and stay protected from insects? Black pepper is a simple and natural solution.
Here are some tips for storing natural fabrics such as batik, eco printed textiles, and other plant-dyed fabrics:
- Place a few black peppercorns in a small muslin or gauze pouch and keep it inside your fabric cabinet. The strong aroma of black pepper acts as a natural insect repellent and remains effective for a long time. Replace the pepper every one to three months.
- Always make sure the fabric is completely dry before storing it. Air the fabric regularly to prevent moisture buildup, mold, and mildew.
- Whenever possible, store fabrics by hanging them. If they must be folded, unfold and hang them from time to time to allow air circulation and reduce fold lines that may eventually affect the fabric’s color or shape.
- Before storing, wash natural fabrics with a natural soap, such as soapberry (lerak), to remove any dirt or residue.
- For additional protection, wrap the fabric in clean cotton calico or unbleached paper to minimize friction and help preserve its quality.
